Supplemental Security Income (SSI) in 2026

What is SSI?

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is a needs-based federal program that provides monthly cash payments to people who have limited income and resources and who are:

Unlike Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), SSI is not based on your work history.

2026 Federal Payment Amounts

Category Maximum Federal Payment
Individual $943 per month
Eligible Couple $1,415 per month
Essential Person +$472 extra

Many states add a state supplement on top of the federal amount.

Income & Resource Limits (2026)

Who Qualifies for SSI?

You must meet all three of these requirements:

  1. Category — Disabled, blind, or age 65+
  2. Limited Income — Countable income below the federal benefit rate
  3. Limited Resources — Under the $2,000 / $3,000 limits

Important Rules for Refugees and Asylees

Refugees, asylees, and certain other humanitarian immigrants can receive SSI if they meet the disability, income, and resource rules.

Example: A refugee who arrived in 2022 and was granted status the same year can generally receive SSI until 2029 if they remain eligible under the other rules.

How Income Affects SSI

SSA does not count all income. Important exclusions include:

Example – Earned Income:
Tom earns $400 in wages.
Countable income = $400 − $85 = $315
SSI payment = $943 − $315 = $628

Example – Unearned Income:
Maria receives a $300 pension.
Countable income = $300 − $20 = $280
SSI payment = $943 − $280 = $663

How to Apply for SSI

  1. Gather documents (ID, immigration papers, medical records, bank statements, proof of income).
  2. Apply online (available for age 65+), by phone at 1-800-772-1213, or at a local SSA office.
  3. Complete an interview (phone or in-person).
  4. SSA reviews your case. Decisions often take 3–5 months. If approved, back payments usually start from the application date.

Tip: Apply even if you are not sure you qualify. SSA will help determine whether you meet the rules.

Yes. Earnings reduce your SSI payment gradually ($1 for every $2 after exclusions). You must report all work to SSA.

Does SSI help me get Medicaid?

In most states, receiving SSI automatically qualifies you for Medicaid.

What if my SSI application is denied?

You can appeal within 60 days. Many people win at the hearing level, especially with representation.

Can refugees and asylees get SSI?

Yes, for up to 7 years after receiving that status, as long as they meet the disability (or age) and financial requirements.
