Social Security Card Replacement in 2026

Replacement is free and often unnecessary if you know your SSN. Limits: 3 per year, 10 lifetime (exceptions for name/work auth changes). Card mailed in ~10 business days.

Replacement Process for U.S. Citizens (Adults)

Many can replace fully online if eligible.

Step 1: Check Eligibility

18+, U.S. mailing address, no changes to SSN/record, valid ID (driver's license/state ID from participating state).

Step 2: Apply Online

Log into my Social Security or start at ssa.gov.

Step 3: Receive

Card mailed in 10 business days. No expedited option.

If not eligible online, start application → self-schedule appointment at local office/card center via ICON tool.

Non-Citizens / Immigrants (H1B, F1, J1, EAD)

Usually cannot complete fully online — must verify original DHS/USCIS documents in person (or hybrid: start online, then appointment).

  1. Start at ssa.gov/number-card/replace-card to begin application.
  2. Self-schedule appointment if prompted (via secure.ssa.gov/ICON/main.jsp).
  3. Bring originals: Passport, I-94, visa/USCIS proof (e.g., I-766 EAD, I-797, DS-2019 for J1, I-20 for F1).
  4. Card mailed 7–14 days after verification.
